2025 Tri-Sail EC12 RCR Regatta Report by Dave Branning, Region 2 Director
Hats off to the Twilight Lake Model Boat Club for hosting three regatta days for three different classes of boats (IOM, EC12 and Star 45) for the Tri Sail Regatta. Founded in 2023 by Stan Switlik and Peter Wright, this Bay Head, Jersey Shore club, is the perfect venue we love to have in our backyard. Check the drone cover picture of their club website which tells the story of this ideal lake.
Day two of the Tri Sail Regatta was the EC12 R2 Championship with a wide geographic turnout of skippers from Maryland to New England. Under the leadership of Regatta Chairman, Sean Bradley, who spared no expense by bringing in seasoned PRO Judy Bonanno to run the festivities. Sean also deployed six GPS buoys to efficiently shape the course square to the wind. This was a welcome addition to have without deploying a kayak to move marks.
Winds were NE, off the Atlantic, in the 5-9mph range all day, and we were able to execute twelve five-leg windward leeward races. Scott Graf, EC12 Class Secretary, came out hot, taking a brief lead over Sean Bradley and David Ramos after four races. At the lunch break, with seven races completed, Ramos, having now won four in a row, earned a ten-point lead over Sean Bradley while Graf garnered a couple of ultimate throw-outs to cling on to third place. Stuart Challoner, Glenn Chalder (Simsbury, CT) and David Crump were hanging in there in the top six.
The consistent final five races gave David Ramos a clear win over Scott Graff by five points, (two throw-outs), with Sean Bradley, with three afternoon bullets, only one point back in third. Stuart Challoner won the battle for fourth, 4.8 points ahead of Glen Chalder. Thanks to Judy Bonanno for running the show, of course taking pictures and the electronic scoring. Also thanks to Leonora and Sean Bradley for making the races and BBQ lunch break perfect.
The EC12 Class is alive and well in Region 2 with new skippers like Peter Wright, Stanley Switlik, Tom Sollas, Dave Crump, and Brendan Hogan making a showing at recent events. Hope to see them in Maryland, Sept 11-13 for the 2025 EC12 Nationals
