2024 EC12 Region 2 Championship Regatta Report
By Dave Branning, AMYA Region 2 Director
The culmination of the six event CPM Race Week was the EC12 R2 Championship Regatta on September 21-22.
Day one was late getting started waiting for the wind to fill but we were able to complete 10 races with 18 boats on a sizable line. If we encountered difficulty with boat contact, we planned to change to another heat system but that was not necessary either day. The fleet did their turns, when necessary, without any complaints.

Day One: Right from the jump the highly seeded skippers rose to the top with Danny Thomas winning two races with all seconds and thirds save one seventh, an ultimate throw-out, to take a two-point lead over David Ramos in second. David also won two races as did Jamie Betz (13 back of Thomas and Alex Ramos (16 back of Thomas) to round out the top four. In fifth was Scott Graff, EC12 Class Secretary, with a bullet. A tip of the hat to former EC12 Class Secretary, Glenn Chalder, back in the class again, winning the sixth race of the day going wire to wire. Fun to watch Glenn hold off the hotshots. The great ones never lose it!

Day Two: A perfect 5-10 knot breeze greeted the skippers and a very lengthy windward/leeward course was set up. After the first race everyone complained the windward mark was way too far to comfortably see roundings. As one skipper remarked: “I can’t see the mark when you place it over the curvature of the earth.” Point taken. We brought it back a bit. The fight at the front of the fleet was a doozie to watch over Sundays thirteen races. Alex Ramos proceeded to jump up three places to duke it out with dad David. Danny Thomas and Jamey Betz each won their share of races but could not hold off the consistency of the Ramos team. In the end Alex and David ended up tied. The tie was broken with Alex having more firsts, six to David’s five.

Observations:
• Annapolis skipper, Drew Beach, is one to watch. Drew went from 6th to 5th on Sunday with a lot of top five races nipping the big boys a few times.
• Huge thanks to hosts Rick and Laura Boulay, owners of the Cedar Point Marina who also welcomed us to their lovely Queenstown home.
• Judy Bonanno was RD for all of the Race Week regattas over nine days and was up to the task. When “head chick in charge,” Judy, calls you over, you are over. Judy also directed the lunch set up as well as taking tons of pictures and entering the results into her tablet at the breaks using Gerry Cobley’s ezRegatta PRO.
• Judy and I teamed up to create a long overdue AMYA Region 2 Appreciation Award given to David Ramos. Working with Scott Graf, David created Race Week, a daunting task when you consider everything from tents, tables, food, prizes (he made them all), terrific buoys, J Class River Race chase boats. That’s not all. As famed boatbuilder and Chesapeake Bay Waterman, Scott Todd summed up David Ramos: “No one works harder to win than David and no one works harder to help you win than David!” No one was excluded from David’s hands-on-trouble-shooting, repairing, replacing broken lines/bungies and what-not for nine days. The framed award given to David was a collage of Judy’s pictures of David bent over a competitor’s cockpit at many regattas. It was the least we could do to express our appreciation for his dedication for many years. To no one’s surprise, David won all the regattas except the EC12 event.
