The Columbia 42 is a semi-scale 12 meter model of the Sparkman and Steven's designed winner of the America's Cup. This boat was generally accepted as the best sailing of the 12's and also the best looking boat on the water.

The development mission for this new class was to "create a good-looking, good sailing boat that can be moved between home and pond fully-rigged, and can handle summer pond weeds that hang up most blade keel boats". The boat weighs just under 10 lbs and has a draft of 8½".

Class Rules

The Columbia 42 is a new One Design addition to the AMYA fleet. It's design mission was to develop an attractive boat (1) that sails well, (2) can be transported to/from home fully-rigged, and (3) can sail in weed conditions most boats can't (thanks to its smooth underbody). The finished product is a semi-scale model of Columbia — the famous 12 meter that won the 1958 America's Cup with Briggs Cunningham at the helm. Columbia, designed by Sparkman and Stevens, was also generally acknowledged to be the best looking of the 12s. The keel on the model is 1½" deeper than the original scale.

A total of 13 developmental boats are grandfathered — 3 fiberglass and 10 with plastic deck inserts (rather than lighter birch plywood).

  1. HULL
    • Length overall is 42" with bow bumper. Hull is 1/8" thermo-formed styrene supplied by the vendor.
    • Maximum beam at the widest point on the sheer line is 7 3/8".
    • Maximum weight ready to sail is 162 oz. Minimum is 152 oz.
  2. II-DECK
    • Deck is 1/16th inch one-piece birch plywood – supplied by vendor
  3. SAILS
    • Maximum sail area is 648 square inches measured inside the combined primary sail measurement triangles of both the main and the jib (must have main and jib) excluding the free roach provision on the Main. Fabric shall be woven polyester (Dacron) with a minimum thickness of .002 inches. Sails must be single paneled. No foot round in either main or jib is permitted.
    • Mainsail
      1. Luff – 46 3/8" maximum and ¾" headboard. The main may have a luff curve of 5/16" to 3/8", 24" at mid luff height. See Sail Plan schematic
      2. Roach – 2" maximum measured from the corner of the clew to the top of the sail as shown in the Sail Plan schematic
      3. Foot must be straight (No concave nor convex allowance).
      4. Battens will be 4" in length and with a width not to exceed ¼". Battens will be equally spaced on the leach.
    • Jibsail
      • Leech and foot must be straight (no concave or convex allowance). The luff is 35¾" and the foot is 13". Sail Plan schematic
      • Luff curve not to exceed 3/8" positive.
      • Jib Battens – may be used, a maximum of 2 with a length not to exceed 2" and a width of no more than ¼". Equally spaced on the leech.
    • Registration Numbers
      1. Registration numbers shall be of a highly contrasting color and at least 3" in height and 3/8" thick.
      2. Class logo will be placed between the top two battens on the Main with starboard higher than port.
      3. Sail numbers will be placed between the bottom two battens on main.
      4. Optional sail number can be placed on the jib using last two numbers.
      5. All sail numbers are assigned by the Class Secretary
    • Corner Patches
      1. Corner patches may not exceed 4"
  4. MAST
    1. Mast height above deck is 51.0" maximum (with crane)
    2. Mast diameter is .380" OD aluminum (no carbon fiber)
    3. Masts that rotate or mechanically cant/pivot from side to side are prohibited. However, masts that rake or bend forward or aft for the purpose of tuning are not prohibited.
    4. Mast may have an adjustable base.
    5. Mast pre-bend is not allowed.
    6. Jumper is optional. Alternate spreaders are not.
    7. Spreaders must be those supplied with kit, or exact replicas.
    8. Replacement masts (2 part) can be ordered from Tentpole Technologies, Vancouver, Washington.
  5. BOOMS
    1. Booms and clubs are .380 aluminum OD, no carbon fiber/alternate materials
    2. Booms cannot be curved.
    3. One counter-balancing weight for the jib boom is permissible – not to extend past the bow (without bumper)
    1. Two functions maximum sails and rudder.
    2. No limitations on battery choice – LIPO, NIMH, LIFE or Alkaline.
    3. Maximum voltage: 6 volts
    4. No limitations on rudder and sheeting mechanisms
    1. Rudder must be the kit rudder provided by vendor. Shape modifications are not permitted.
    2. Rudder must be attached to the rear of the keel fin.
    3. In the event of damage, owner may fashion another rudder that conforms to the size of the original part.
    1. Ballast may not exceed 88 oz nor be less than 76 oz.
    2. No modifications to styrene keel shape are permitted.
    3. Owner may use lead shot or a formed ballast insert
    • Multi hull and outrigger configurations, movable keels, shifting and/or movable ballast, bilgeboards and /or bilgekeels, tunnel hulls, trim tabs, rotating mast, wing sails, hydrofoils, and other appurtenances that raise the hull out of the water.

      (For the purpose of this section batteries are NOT shifting and/or movable Ballast)
